The 12th Annual Podcast Awards nomination opened with the new site and process making the debut earlier this spring. With the re-organization of the awards and the new committee in place to help shape what comes next we feel the site and awards are in a much better position to move forward. While the registration in fee in 2016 was met with some complaints we feel that we are now able to sustain the awards without having to write a personal check each year to make up the difference.
While we did entertain bids to sell the awards in 2017, each entity minus one wanted to heavily commercialize it and we felt that the spirit of the awards would not be maintained. Thus we buckled down, used the GoFundMe campaign funds and re-built the site. While the build cost will come in higher than then the money we raised we feel confident that we can make up the difference and proceed in out years with the infrastructure we have now.
The new rules for the 11th Annual Podcast Awards have been up for less than 24 hours and my inbox is already full. So I wanted to point everyone to the recent edition of the New Media Show where I laid out the new rules and the reasoning for the changes.
If everyone takes the time to listen to the episode, podcasters will get some insights into the changes.
We have launched a GoFundMe campaign to rebuild the podcast awards site.. The goal is to raise $25,000 dollars. Details on what we are trying to accomplish is available on the GoFundMe page and also some background on the changes coming to the entire People’s Choice Podcast Awards process is linked on the Podcast Awards home page.
The new rules and structure of the awards will be announced on April 1st. So while I am sure many will want to wait and see what the changes are, I wanted to get the fund raising underway so that we can be well on our way when nominations open on April 15th.
When I founded the podcast awards, little did I know the passion podcasters would have about the People’s Choice Podcast Awards. Throughout the past 11 years, millions of podcast listeners have nominated and voted for their favorite shows each year.
The awards have been very much a project of passion. And while at times they were supported through financial injection of my personal company, I have remained committed to providing a transparent venue for podcasters to be honored by their audiences and peers.
While other awards have popped up and are special in their own way, the People’s Choice Podcast Awards is unique in that the fans drive the awards process.
As most know, I attempted to divest myself from the awards in 2014 by selling to the New Media Expo. As many witnessed there were serious issues with the transition, and the awards ceremony masters of ceremonies actions culminated into something not worthy of the fans and the awards itself. Little did we know that the New Media Expo would disappear and sadly not be able to complete the transaction for the podcast awards in 2015.
So here we are. I have never been one to walk away from something, and I am not going to do that now. I realize that Podcast Awards is going to need a serious re-work of the site itself, a complete revamp of the rules and awards processes. And I’m going to need your thoughts and ideas.
I have come to some decisions on how I will proceed. I will run the 11th annual Podcast Awards with the current site and infrastructure while at the same time we will run a GoFundMe campaign to raise the $25,000 needed to rebuild, restructure the site. I will also appreciate your thoughts and ideas as we rebuild Podcast Awards.
Before nominations open this year, I will completely restructure the rules and process of the awards with input from you, our trusted members of the podcast community. But I want to make one thing very clear: the People’s Choice Podcast Awards will remain in body and soul a podcast-listener event.
No awards process is perfect, to be honest a perfect process does not exist and whatever we come up with someone will bitch about it. That said the existing process can be improved significantly.
Things up for consideration:
Minimal Show Registration Fee
Listener Nomination Period
Peer Nomination Period
Nominated Shows Review Process
Annual Podcast Legends Award
Nominated Fairness Doctrine
I look forward to your input. And look forward to rolling out the new process by April 1 and opening Nominations by April 15.
Update Feb 2016 – With New Media Expo having abandoned the Awards and not fulfilling contractual obligations of the Podcast Awards Acquisition. The founder of Podcast Awards has retained control of the site and will proceed to re-launch the awards process in the very near future.
As Founder of the Podcast Awards, I want to announce some exciting news. After some thought, I’ve made the decision to sell The Podcast Awards to New Media Expo and their team. I made this decision as Rick and his team have been so involved with us over the past few years.
It has been my absolute pleasure to create and run the awards for the past 9 years, giving podcasters a platform to be recognized. All of this would not have been possible without the support of the podcasting community, and the podcasters that supported the show financially. I will be forever grateful for their participation.
Over the past couple of years, New Media Expo has been instrumental in our Awards Ceremony’s success. I feel certain that the NMX team is ready to take The Podcast Awards to the next level.
Of course, I am not disappearing. I will have a founders’ role and will advise the NMX team in the development and production of the 10th annual event, April 14th in Las Vegas, NV. While Rick and his team will likely make some changes along the way, the spirit of the Peoples Choice Awards will still remain, with the nominees and winners being selected by the listeners, fans and podcasters.
The team at New Media Expo have been gracious to host the Podcast Awards Ceremony over the past couple of years. Last year they were able to get Leo Laporte, to emcee the event and this morning we are able to announce that Dr. Drew will be the emcee of the 9th Annual People’s Choice Podcast Awards. The NMX team has worked incredibly hard to have Dr. Drew be the emcee of the Awards Ceremony. I am especially grateful that they are a partner and I expect the Awards Ceremony
Dr. Drew is the host of The Dr. Drew Show, which is the #1 health podcast on iTunes. You might also know him from Loveline, the longest running nationally syndicated radio show. He’s a frequent guest on NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning America and ABC’s The View, as well as various entertainment and talk shows such as the Dr. Oz Show, Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel Live, E!, EXTRA!, and Entertainment Tonight.
